COUSTOM DESIGN

CABARAT

Cabaret is a musical by Fred Av and John Kander. The musical is set in Berlin in 1930 and deals with a number of central figures.

These years, before the start of World War II and the rise of the Nazis to power, were difficult years. Citizens have not yet fully recovered from the dire economic situation and the severe loss of the First World War. With the reality that comes with loneliness, poverty and loss on the streets of Berlin, the musical introduces the Kit Kat Club, which is a cabaret club full of life, joy, sexuality and freedom, which is inspired by an extroverted character in the name of the moderator. The story tells us about  Cliff, an American writer who comes to Berlin and meets Sally' the cabaret dancer from the club. Ernest is a new member of Cliff, who later turns out to be a Nazi. Cliff stays in a hostel belonging to Proline Schneider, who manages a complex relationship with a Jew named Mr. Schultz.

In this course we were asked to choose a play, and from this we choose a character for which we will design costumes in 3 scenes of our choice' Later we will have to choose a new concept for the play, which will affect all the costume design in the play but will not hurt the text and remain true to the original character without any changes.

The character I chose to design for is the club facilitator, a character full of joy, cynicism, sexuality and extroverted. The first scene I chose is the first scene of the club, when the facilitator opens singing and introduces the cabaret dancers fairly sexually. He invites the audience to forget about the day-to-day troubles and reach the place where everything is possible.
The second scene I chose is Sally's joining Cliff's room, with the host portraying his character as a taxi driver. The third scene is a cabaret monologue scene in which he sings about his Jewish lover and dances with a gorilla.

From the original nature of the play, I realized that anti-Semitism was at the length of the plot and even getting stronger and deeper into it. My choice in the new concept was to bring to light the elements of the Nazi soldier's clothing, as they blend in with the guiding officer from scene to scene as the plot progresses.

Initially, the anti-Semitic feeling is felt only as a companion to the plot. But as the play progresses, harsh anti-Semitic scenes apply to the Jewish characters in the play. By learning about Nazi clothing, I took elements of formal clothing and combined it with the extroverted, sexual, and colorful cabaret  clothing.
